If you’ve been looking for a new song to play repeatedly on loop, your prayers have been answered. Beyoncé and R Kelly have collaborated on a remix of “if i were a boy,” the best-selling single from B’s 2008 album I am… Sasha Fierce. The new track starts with Beyoncé singing the opening line from the male perspective: "Doing all that I can just to keep them off us." In this iteration, he's blaming 'them' (other women) for his own cheating ways. The video for the remix was directed by Beyoncé and Hype Williams, who directed a few of Sasha Fierce's previous videos. The new video takes place in a modern-day version of a Mississippi riverboat casino. Kelly's wife Andrea is seen jumping from an upper deck to the lower deck below, failing to reach the casino floor where Beyoncé was performing. Kelly sings on this track as well. The lyrics are drastically different from his usual style, veering off into more of a melancholy tone that would befit a second verse on Beyoncé's song. If you’re not familiar with R Kelly’s music, just think of him as the male equivalent of Beyoncé. He was the mastermind behind “Bump n’ Grind” and “I Believe I Can Fly,” both of which are considered early hip hop classics. If you listen to “if i were a boy,” you can tell that Kelly had a major role in the songwriting process. The remix for this song is fantastic because it completely changes the tone of the original song. By hearing it from a second point of view, you gain insight into what Beyoncé was thinking when she originally wrote it. It’s a very clever idea. Beyoncé and Kelly will perform this song together at the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards. Tune in Sunday at 9 p.m., when the awards air live from Las Vegas. The music video was released on July 28, 2009 featuring behind-the-scenes footage of the photo shoot for the artwork to "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)", and premiered on BET's 106 & Park on August 8, 2009. The video portrays Beyoncé and Kelly as two artists who meet one day while working at a casino and decide to collaborate together musically. Beyoncé and Kelly are shown as the main subjects in a still photograph as they sing and dance together, singing lines from "If I Were a Boy". Some parts of the video are different from the audio version, such as when Beyoncé is singing her part in a room with her friends, then she goes to a blackjack table where she meets R. Kelly and they sing together. The music video ends with both Beyoncé and Kelly walking through a hallway together.
